The focus of this module is to introduce some foundational concepts in the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in the emergency department. Later Capsules modules will delve more into the treatment of specific conditions (e.g., pneumonia).

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the risks and benefits of antimicrobials for various infectious etiologies encountered in emergency medicine (sepsis, pharyngitis, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections)
  2. Identify which antimicrobials may be safely used in patients with a history of drug allergies (e.g., penicillin allergy)
  3. Describe the evidence behind techniques to optimize antimicrobial pharmacokinetics (e.g., vancomycin loading doses and prolonged infusions of beta-lactam antibiotics)

      Thanks for catching this, Greg. Not sure why the recent wordpress updates are possibly causing some of our quizzes to return to “unpublished/draft” form.
